FM 2017 Tactics Guide
It can be said that this is the main theme of Football Manager series. Creating a successful tactic in Football Manager 2017 is not an easy process and it may take hours or even days until you find the perfect FM17 tactic.
Creating tactics can be complex for beginners in the game because there are several options which are possible to choose and each option that you select will have effect on your team’s style of play. We will describe in this basic FM17 tactics guide what are the items that are possible to choose/edit in the tactics screen.
Choose the type of formation (ex: 4-4-2 or 4-3-3) and assign roles to the players.
First thing to do is what kind of formation you want to use. For this, just click on the players icons/shirts and drag them across the pitch to the desired position(s).
Now, let’s define the role of each player in your FM17 tactic. Left click with the mouse on the player you wish to set a different role, and after that, right click on the same player. Now, you’ll be able to view the different roles that you can select to that player position.
By selecting each role you’ll see a description of that role on the left side of the tactics field.
FM 2017 Mentality
Now, after you have assigned all roles to all players, let’s move to the mentalities.
Mentality is the concept of your team play. You want a defensive or an attacking team? Very briefly is this.
There are seven different types of mentalities that you can select: Contain, Defensive, Counter, Standard, Control, Attacking, and Overload.
FM 2017 Team Shape
Team shape is the type of connection between the various sectors (defenders, midfielders and attackers) of your team.
You have five different types of team shape available: Highly Structured, Structured, Flexible, Fluid, and Very Fluid.
When passing your mouse over each one of them it is possible to see a detailed description of each team shape.
FM 2017 Team Instructions
By clicking in this option will open up a pop-up window in which you can define special instructions to your team.
You can define instructions to your defensive players such as: size of your defensive line, use offside trap, type of closing down, type of tackling, prevent short distribution of your goalkeeper, and use tighter marking.
You can also select the type of build-up play from your team (exploit flanks, middle, etc…). Such as: level of directness passing, passing into spaces (yes or not) and the level of creative freedom.
Lastly, you have the attackers sector in which you can define the type of moves in the final third and the type of crosses. You can also define the type of dribble of your attackers and the freedom of movements.
FM 2017 Player Instructions
Now, click on the player tab.
Here is the place where you can set individual instructions to each one of your players in your formation.
By clicking on the edit button you will have the possibility to define individual instructions to your player “When opposition has the ball”, “When team has the ball” or “When player has the ball”.
Confirm or cancel your individual instructions and you’ll be redirected again to the player screen.
This same screen you have another option called “swap positions with…”. When selecting a player in this option, it means that both will switch positions during the match.
FM 2017 Set Pieces
Now, let’s go the next step. Click on Set Pieces -> Set Pieces takers.
This part is quite simple, you will define who takes the corners, free kicks and throw-ins.
On the left you have a table with the players of your team that you have to click and drag to the place that you want (corners (left side or right side), same for free kicks and throw-ins).
To help you, on the same table, you have the ability to see who are the most appropriate players to take the corners, free kicks and throw-ins. To do that you just need to click on the attribute that you need (corners, free kicks, long throws).
Note: You can add more than one player on each side (left or right). So, if the first player on the list is not playing in some match, then the second will take his place, and so on…
FM 2017 Penalties
Click on set pieces –> penalties.
This works the same way as the corners, free kicks etc…
On the right side of the table you have the three most important attributes for taking penalties (Finishing, Composure and Penalty taking)
Just drag and drop to the right table the players you wish to take the penalties.
FM 2017 Corners, Free Kicks and Throw-ins Routines
By clicking on set pieces -> corners or free kicks or throw-ins
This is another important part when creating a Football Manager 2017 tactic. Having a good set pieces routine can decide matches.
This is where you decide the movements of your team in set pieces.
You have two set pieces scenarios available on corners and free kicks (defend and attack) and one set pieces scenario for throw-ins (attack).
You have two set pieces locations (left and right) for all.
All you have to do is drag the players to the set piece role intended (drop). By left clicking in the shirts/players you’ll see at the footer the most important attributes for that set piece role.
FM 2017 Choose a Captain
Click on the next tab Captains, at the right of set pieces tab.
Now, you will choose the captain and vice-captain for your team. The most important attributes when choosing a good captain for your team are: Leadership, Determination and the Age.
Note: Do not forget to set a third or fourth player on that captains list. Remember that both (captain and vice-captain) may be unavailable in some matches due to injuries or suspensions in that case the third or fourth player will take the lead.
FM 2017 Opposition Instructions
On this area, the goal is to define individual instructions against your opponents. You can define if you want tight marking, closing down, type of tackling and show onto foot.
And voila, this is a basic FM17 Tactic guide on how to create a tactic from scratch.
